This article is about an Indian chemist. He authored the book "Chemistry" which was published by Pub. Upteen in 1935. The book has long been very popular, and an online version of it is freely available at the internet archive website. He studied at Presidency College, Madras where he passed his matriculation examination with distinction and obtained the equivalent degree of BSc from University of Madras, Madras. He then went to Clark University at Worcester, Massachusetts on an American Government Scholarship awarded by the erstwhile Madras Government for higher studies in Chemistry to do post-graduate research under Prof E F Allen for his Doctorate degree (1927–1929). He then went to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for his second doctorate degree (1929–1932). He joined Indian Petrochemicals Ltd, Mumbai in 1951. In 1954 he became the Director of Research and Development, a position which he held until his retirement from Indian Petrochemicals in 1959. He was also a member of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research from 1962 to 1967. He was pivotal in setting up three huge chemical manufacturing companies in India namely Vikas Corporation Limited at Gujarat, Vavilal Industries Limited at Gujrat and Gujarat Ammos Private limited at Vadodara. Dr Dalal is credited with many achievements in the field of chemistry and in the area of industrial chemistry. He was a pioneering scientist in the area of production of nitrogenous fertilizers and organic chemicals from natural gas. He started an industry for manufacture of fluorine mustard for defence purposes. He was involved in research on cellulose derivatives, such as glycerol diacetate, high molecular weight silicone polyethers, copolymers and crosslinkable silicones. Dr Dharam Veer Dalal published 7 books and more than 50 research papers on topics ranging from theoretical chemistry to industrial chemistry. His books are very popular and have been translated into many Indian and foreign languages. He was a member of the Chemical Society, UK and a former President of the Chemical Association of India.
